Try Ice Cream Made for Japanese Royalty at These Popular Parlors In Hokkaido!

  • Hokkaido Prefecture is known not only for its fresh seafood but also for its fresh milk and dairy products. The majority of the milk products that are supplied throughout Japan come from Hokkaido. Locals take pride in the abundance of milk that they produce, and because of this, wonderful ice cream parlors and cafés are scattered all over the region!

    Yukijirushi Parlor

One of the most famous ice cream parlors in Hokkaido is Yukijirushi Parlor (Snow Brand Parlor). It is operated by Megmilk Snow Brand Co. Ltd, one of the leading milk and dairy manufacturers in Japan.

This parlor has a lot of branches in Hokkaido, with its flagship store located near Sapporo Station. With its immense popularity, Yukijirushi is known for its extraordinary ice cream that is said to have been originally specially made for the Emporer, the highest ruler of Japan!

    Snow Royal Special

Snow Royal Special ice-cream was first introduced in 1968 when Emperor Hirohito of the Showa period and his wife Empress Kojun, visited Hokkaido for its 100th anniversary. The company received a special request from the Imperial Household Agency to make the best ice cream for the emperor and empress of Japan to celebrate their visit. It took them two years to make the ice cream perfect for the royal family!

This milky white and velvety smooth vanilla ice cream is made up of 8.5% non-fat milk solids and 15.6% milk fat. This is the reason why it is so rich in flavor and creamy in texture. This unique ice cream is also very light and fluffy because it doesn’t contain eggs.

    Parfaits, Pancakes, and More

Yukijirushi Parlor is famous for its jumbo parfaits. One of its specialties is called the Dream Jumbo Parfait. This gigantic cold dessert is made up of agar-agar and several fruits, which serves as the base of the parfait. It’s topped with a few layers of baumkuchen cake and different flavors of ice cream, strawberries, and fresh cream. This is definitely a feast for the eyes that can be shared among a big group!

A wide selection of single serving parfaits are also available. The café has traditional flavors like chocolate and strawberry, as well as other combinations and seasonal flavors such as caramel and banana, matcha, coffee jelly, and many more!

The café doesn’t only have ice cream for dessert. Fluffy pancakes are also served, topped with either whipped cream paired with their original Snow Royal Special ice cream or fresh strawberries and homemade pudding.

Perhaps you want to eat something savory first before digging into their desserts? The parlor also offers savory dishes which are perfect to eat at any time of the day. You can choose from their pasta dishes such as shrimp cream sauce, classic carbonara, and meat bolognese, as well as their rice dishes, Hokkaido beef, and cheese curry.

Still can’t get enough of sweets? Then you’re in the right place as the ice cream parlor also has a souvenir shop, selling different kinds of chocolates, candies, and biscuits to satisfy your sweet tooth! Popular brands such as Royce’s potato chip chocolates and Nama Chocolate, Ishiya’s Chocolat Blanc Langue de Chat, and Yukijirushi’s very own camembert cheesecake and vanilla baumkuchen are available.

Yukijirushi Ice Cream Parlor’s main branch is located in Sapporo at the Sun Life Sapporo Building, and its opening hours are from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm Monday to Sunday. The last orders are at 8:30 pm.

Yukijirushi Parlor commits itself to preserving the traditional taste of their ice cream and other delicacies, which are made from fresh and raw ingredients found in Hokkaido. What’s more, this cozy café is a great place to unwind and hang out with your family and friends. So be sure to make Yukijirushi Parlor your next meeting place and try their mouth watering specialties while you’re in Sapporo!
