Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist and writer who has worked in varieties of media. She first started using polka dots and nets as a motif for her artworks at the age of 10.

When Yayoi started settling in New York City in 1957, she was able to produce several paintings influenced by abstract expressionism, a World War II art movement in American painting. She then became associated with the pop art movement in the 1960s. This movement presented a challenge to traditions of fine art. Yayoi also embraced the hippie counterculture and called the public attention by painting naked participants in brightly colored polka dots.

In 1968, she produced a film called Kusama’s Self-Obliteration in which she also starred. She then returned to Japan in 1973 where she continued creating art. She has received several awards such as the National Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2006.

This is not the first time that Yayoi Kusama will be sharing her works to the public in Tokyo. In 2004, she had a solo exhibition named “KUSAMATRIX” in Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum wherein a total of 530,000 visitors came. It was followed by another exhibit at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. Her artworks have also traveled to other museums in Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Kumamoto, and even overseas.

This October 2017, the Yayoi Kusama Museum will be opening in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward. The main objective of the museum is to spread the message of world peace and love which can be seen in Yayoi’s artworks. Two exhibitions will be held at the museum yearly in order to achieve this objective.

The first exhibition will be open to the public starting October 1, 2017, and it will feature Yayoi’s latest “My Eternal Soul” painting series. This exhibition features several paintings in pulsating combinations of colors. You can identify many imageries in her paintings which make them very unique and fun to look at. She also has been experimenting with different forms of art including collages, sculptures, poetry, and many more!

The upcoming opening of the Yayoi Kusama Museum is expected to draw a lot of visitors to the place. It will be an opportunity to see a number of the artist’s collections and the messages she wants to convey.
