Take a Break From Ueno’s Crowd by Heading to These 3 Cafes in the Area

  • UENO
  • A district in the Taito Ward of Tokyo, Ueno is surrounded by some of the finest cultural sites in the country – there is the Ueno Park, Ueno Zoo, and the many art museums among others. But apart from those, there are a lot more hidden areas to venture into. If you find yourself exhausted going around Ueno and in need of a break, here are three cafes that provide satisfying treats where you can chill and relax.

    1. Galant

Just near Ueno Station and Ameyoko, Galant is a cafe that has a Showa era feel. The place is really classy with all its bricks and chandeliers, and most people who come to this cafe are businessmen.

Galant doesn’t only offer coffee but also Japanese meals such as omurice (an omelette made with fried rice). A recommended menu here is their kakigori (Japanese shaved ice dessert) with matcha topped with vanilla ice cream and adzuki beans (small, red beans). However, there is an additional charge of 100 yen for vanilla ice cream and 150 yen for adzuki beans. You can also avail of the typical Japanese cream soda, which is a delicious melon-flavored drink with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

It is very rare to see this kind of atmosphere in a coffee shop in Japan, making Galant quite a unique place to relax. The place is open all year round from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

    2. Kayaba Coffee

Kayaba Coffee is a charming old cafe that has been around for over 70 years. It started serving people in 1938 but closed down when the owner died in 2006. Fortunately, it reopened again in 2009 with the help of a local non-profit organization in Japan.

A popular item on Kayaba Coffee’s menu is their egg sandwich which costs 500 yen. It is thick and made of tamagoyaki, a type of Japanese omelette made by rolling together layers of eggs. During summer, you can also grab their seasonal dessert that is shaved ice with ginger.

The place is open all year round from 8:00 AM to 10:30 PM, except on Sundays and Mondays where it closes earlier.

café Lapin is the ideal place for those looking for authentic coffee. Its interior has a natural light brown color and a lot of flowers and greenery, giving a very relaxing vibe.

The cafe has a comfortable space for you to enjoy your coffee, sandwich, salad, and the like. They also sell several kinds of coffee beans for roasting.

café Lapin is open from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM so you can have breakfast and lunch here. Note, however, that this is a non-smoking establishment and that there is no parking space available.
