Kyoto is a gorgeous city with much to see. It is a popular place for both Japanese and foreign tourists and is home to many cafes and restaurants with a casual vibe. However, there are so many nice places to choose from that it can be difficult to decide which one to try!
One cafe in Kyoto is popularizing the concept of drinking from the clouds. Alpha Foods & Drink has long been searching for a unique way of serving coffee in order to distinguish them from the rest. They’ve now come up with an innovative way of drinking coffee by using sweet cotton candy rather than sugar. The cotton candy is served to appear like a ball of clouds falling into the cup itself!
Alpha Foods and Drink was founded in 2015. It is located on the western side of Nijo Ogawa Street in Kyoto. It looks attractive on the outside with a yellow door that has a message saying “coffee, tea, matcha, espresso.” It looks classic yet fashionable!
You can also scroll the menu displayed outside before you decide to hop in. The space inside is long and narrow and can comfortably accommodate up to 20 customers. The seats are wide (including sofa seats, counter seats, and couple seats), and the atmosphere is calming. However, there is no private room nor a parking space for cars.
Children and pets are allowed in the cafe. If you’re in a hurry, you can also order meals and drinks for takeout. This cafe is accessible from Nijo Castle Station on Tozai Subway Line. It is open from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and is open daily except on Wednesdays.
Unlike other cafes, Alpha Foods and Drink serves a mysterious drink called “Undersea Coffee” (Kumo-shita Coffee) or “Coffee Under Clouds.” Ordering this item will allow you to discover and enjoy a unique way of drinking coffee! You will be given a ready prepared coffee which has a large ball of cotton candy on top. The name of the item is derived from the fact that the coffee is set under the cotton candy, which looks like clouds.
The cotton candy is suspended in the air with the help of a quaint-looking clip! This is something that may remind you of your childhood and it is also a fun way to drink coffee, as if you were experimenting in a science laboratory! You have to wait for your clouds to set in before drinking as it must dissolve in the same way as sugar. It can take longer than five minutes so you have to be a bit patient, but it’s worth it!
If you want, you can speed up the process by putting some clouds into your drink with a spoon. A set of this costs 650 yen. If you’d like to order a Cloud Drink, then you may choose from the following drinks: Milk Tea, Cappuccino, Fresh Banana Milk, Coffee, Cocoa, Cold Strawberry Milk, Soy Coffee, Mango Milk and Matcha au lait. These are the only drinks which are served with cotton candy.
This set perfectly matches the “Pot Plant” Dessert (Hachiue Dessert) which is also filled with sweetness. It literally looks like a pot filled with black soil but is actually chocolate! If you order both of these on weekdays, you can get a 100-yen discount, plus you can take an amazing picture which is great for all the social networkers out there! The cafe turns into a bar from 6:00 p.m. You can then order shochu, wine, and cocktails.
If you’re a cotton-candy lover and are intrigued about this cloud drink concept, you’d better look for this cafe which is a hidden treasure in Kyoto. It can easily be found due to its yellow exterior. Experience a drink under the clouds and a dessert from underground!
