Often shortened to Oofuri, Big Windup! is an ongoing baseball manga series by Asa Higuchi. It is serialized in Kodansha’s monthly seinen magazine, “Afternoon.” Since its first publication in 2003, the series has also been published in tankobon format and currently has 28 volumes.
Oofuri is an award-winning manga which received the grand prize in the 31st Kodansha Manga Award in 2007 and the New Hope Award from the 10th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2006. It is also a recommended work by the Japan Media Arts Festival.
The manga was adapted as an animated series by A-1 Pictures which aired from April to September 2007 with a total of 25 episodes for the first season. A second season aired from April to June 2010 with a total of 13 episodes.
Ren Mihashi transfers to Nishiura High School from Mihoshi Academy, which is owned by his grandfather, where he used to play baseball as a pitcher. However, while he loved pitching, his three-year experience in middle school being ostracized by his teammates, who believed he was only made pitcher as a favor, made him leave the school entirely.
Seeking a fresh start at Nishiura, Mihashi stumbles upon the baseball team and hesitantly stands on the mound once more as a pitcher. He earns new friends in his teammates and gains confidence in his skill as they train and play baseball. Together, Mihashi and the Nishiura Baseball Team aim for the national tournament at Koshien.
