New Year’s Day is an important event in the life of a Japanese person. Many of them hold feasts and visit shrines to pray and receive blessings in the coming year. In line with this, the Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto will be holding a grand gala dinner and a countdown party on December 31, 2017. It will allow guests to have a beautiful New Year experience complete with a stunning dinner inspired by “The Tale of Genji” and dance performances as well as live music.
“The Tale of Genji” is a classic Japanese novel by Murasaki Shikibu. It focuses on the life of Genji, the son of ancient Japanese Emperor Kiritsubo. Since the passing of his mother, Genji’s life started falling apart. His lack of backup in the court removed him from the line of succession. He was made into a commoner and became a member of the non-royal Genji clan. He was known by another name, Minamoto, and pursued a career as an imperial officer.
A huge part of the tale concentrates on Genji’s romantic life. He was involved with different women and different love affairs. Later on, he returned to the capital and settles with Murasaki and several other ladies. When Genji turned 40 years old, his life started declining. He married another wife, the Third Princess, which changed his relationship with his beloved Murasaki who became a Buddhist nun. The ending is quite abrupt with Genji wondering how life can be so fleeting.
